FAQ

About Pasture to Porch

Pasture to Porch delivers local, beyond organic food and farm products directly to your door. We understand the importance of eating local food that is raised the way God intended…without pesticides, hormones, antibiotics or genetically modified ingredients. We also understand how hard it is to source the best food for your family and how many stores and farmers markets you have to visit to purchase that food. Our hope is that we can deliver those items directly to your door and eliminate the time you spend searching for the best food.

We are proud to offer the following items for sale:

  • Grass fed beef
  • Woodlot raised pork
  • Pastured chicken
  • Fresh eggs
  • Jams and jellies made from the freshest, local ingredients
  • Spice mixes
  • Cooking mixes
  • Baked goods from a local baker
  • Honey from a local apiary
  • Honey based personal care products
  • Goat milk based personal care products

At this time, we do not. We have found that offering perishable items often times ends up resulting in reduced customer satisfaction. We take great pride in the products we offer and would hate to see our customers less than ecstatic about their order. This is something that we will continue to evaluate.

Yes, our minimum order is $25 before sales tax and after coupons are applied

That’s a great question! In one word, the answer is SEASONALITY. Shopping in a grocery store has spoiled us to having strawberries in December and New York Strip steaks year round. We raise all of our own pork, chickens and eggs and partner with local growers for our beef and honey. Sometimes, demand outpaces supply and there is a lull. We consider this a good thing. It means that our consumers love our product and we need to increase our production. That sounds easy but I’d like to give you a case scenario for pork.

  • As of May 1, 2019, we were almost sold out of pork. We purchased 5 piglets in March but they were not ready to send to the processor until the first part of August. That meant that we had very little pork to sell in May, June and July. When you’re hungry for bacon, that’s a long time to wait.
  • Anticipating increased demand, we have worked with a local farmer and purchased 9 more piglets in July. Those pigs won’t be ready to process until November. The resulting pork will have to meet our demand until August 2020. Will that be enough? Too much? August 2020 is over a year away and we’re having to make those decisions NOW. We are bound to get it wrong along the way…

As for eggs, our hens have laid as few as 4 eggs a day in January and literally dozens of eggs in May. It’s the seasonal nature of food. I hope that you will appreciate the abundance of some things while also understanding the scarcity of others throughout the year.

This is such a complicated question to answer. The short answer is NO.

The long answer is still NO but it deserves some explanation. The “Organic” label is regulated by the USDA and certification requires mountains and mountains of paperwork. Our philosophy at Pasture to Porch is that we will take the best of both worlds to offer our customers the best products available.

For instance, let’s look at our Strawberry Jam. We searched and searched for a local U Pick operation that didn’t spray its strawberries. After contacting four of our local operations, we had relegated ourselves to purchasing USDA labeled Organic strawberries from Kroger even though they would be imported from Mexico. Through the power of Facebook, I located a grower an hour and a half away that doesn’t spray their strawberries with any chemicals. So guess what I did? I drove an hour and a half each way to pick gallons of strawberries for our yummy jam. Partnered with organic sugar and non-GMO pectin, our jam is as natural as can be. Is it labeled as organic? No way…we can’t afford the fancy label. Is it “beyond organic”? You betcha! We have sold out of our local, beyond organic strawberry jam and now we’ll have to wait until next May to pick more strawberries.

Our beef is fed only grass and hay from start to finish. Our pigs and chickens are fed non-GMO feed from Sunrise Farms in Stuarts Draft, VA. This is the same farm that supplies Polyface Farms with their feed. If it’s good enough for Joel Salatin, it’s good enough for us!

In fact, we believe so much in the products that Sunrise Farms produces that we became a distributor for them! If you are interested in purchasing feed for your animals, please contact us. Please note that feed is pick up only; we do not deliver feed.

We partner with Chestnut Ridge Garden for our honey and honey based personal care products. They are local beekeepers out of southern Chesterfield who have turned their hobby into a business. All of their items are made by hand in small batches. They are regulars at the Colonial Heights Farmers Market on Saturday. You can check out their Facebook page here.

We partner with Sarah Kay’s Kitchen located here in Dinwiddie County for all of our baked goods. Sarah has turned her love of baking into a side business that keeps families (including mine) filled up with treats. She also generously donates her sweets and treats to local schools and church functions. You can check out her Facebook page here

We are lucky enough to partner with Mardelian Farm for our goat based personal care products. Located right here in Dinwiddie County, every batch of soap and lotion is made with only the highest quality ingredients. You can check out their Facebook page here.
